High strength steel in motor vehicles

Fact sheet about environmental benefits of high strength steel in vehicles.

In English.
2015. 2 s.

High strength steel is especially interesting in the transport sector. High strength steels are stronger than conventional steels and can be used to produce safe, lighter and more fuel-efficient vehicles.

There is great potential for cutting emissions from transport journeys through increased use of high strength steel in vehicles in Europe and indeed globally.

Where the vehicle weight could be reduced by 10 per cent, the fuel consumption would decrease by about 5 per cent. Since over 90 per cent of the transport sector’s environmental impact arises on use of motor vehicles, primarily in the form of emissions of carbon dioxide and other environmentally damaging substances from the fuel, there are great environmental gains to be made with lighter but safe vehicles.

The fact sheet is a summery from a case study within the environmental research program The Steel Eco-Cycle.
